Dental Crowns
Dental crowns help repair and protect teeth that have been damaged by decay, injury, or large, failing fillings. A crown may also be recommended after root canal treatment or to restore a fractured tooth where the structure has been compromised.
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of the tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance. It not only protects the remaining tooth structure but also allows you to chew and speak comfortably whilst maintaining a natural-looking smile.
Dr Shabri uses high-quality materials and precise techniques to ensure your crown blends seamlessly with your natural teeth, providing long-lasting function and aesthetics.
Treatment Overview
The fitting of a dental crown usually takes place over two appointments.
First appointment:
Assessment
Your tooth and bite are carefully examined to confirm whether a crown is the most suitable option.
Preparation
Any decayed, damaged, or weakened parts of the tooth are removed and the remaining structure is shaped to allow space for the crown.
Impressions / Scan
A precise record is taken and sent to the dental laboratory to create your custom-fit crown.
Temporary crown
A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made.
Second Appointment:
Fitting
Around two weeks later, your new crown is carefully fitted, adjusted for comfort, and bonded securely in place.

FAQs
What are dental crowns made of?
Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold. Dr Shabri will recommend the most appropriate material based on the location of the tooth, aesthetic requirements, and functional demands.
How long do crowns last?
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, crowns can last 10–15 years or longer. Factors such as grinding, biting hard objects, or poor oral hygiene can reduce their lifespan. Dr Shabri will provide guidance on caring for your crown to maximise its longevity.
Will my crown look natural?
Yes. Dr Shabri takes great care to match the colour, shape, and size of your crown to your natural teeth, ensuring it blends seamlessly with your smile. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are particularly lifelike and are indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Does the procedure hurt?
No. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic before any work begins, so the procedure is comfortable. After the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience mild sensitivity, which typically resolves within a few days. Dr Shabri will provide aftercare instructions and pain management advice if needed.
Are crowns better than fillings?
Crowns are recommended when a tooth is too damaged to be supported by a filling or inlay. They provide full coverage and long-term protection.
Is there any special aftercare?
After your crown has been fitted, you should avoid any chewy, sticky or hard foods for 48 hours to allow optimal cementation. After this, you should treat your crown as you would a natural tooth.
How should I care for my crown?
Care for your crown as you would your natural teeth – brush twice daily, floss regularly, and attend routine dental check-ups. Avoid biting very hard objects such as ice or pens, and if you grind your teeth, consider wearing a nightguard to protect both your crown and natural teeth.
Will I need to replace my crown in the future?
Over time, natural wear or gum changes may mean replacement is needed. If a crown becomes cracked, loose, or damaged, it can be repaired or replaced.
With regular maintenance, however, crowns often last many years and can be easily updated if required to maintain optimal health and appearance.
