Retainers

After orthodontic treatment, retainers are essential to keep your smile beautifully aligned. Teeth naturally shift over time, and retainers help maintain your results – protecting the time and investment you’ve made in your smile.

Dr Shabri offers both fixed and removable retainers, and will assess your needs to recommend the most appropriate option, or a combination of both, for optimal, lasting results.

Treatment Overview

Retainers hold your teeth in their new positions whilst the surrounding bone and soft tissues stabilise. Without retention, teeth will naturally drift back towards their original positions, undoing months or years of orthodontic treatment.

Dr Shabri will assess your individual risk of relapse and recommend the most appropriate retention plan for your needs.

Fixed retainers

A fine wire is bonded discreetly behind your front teeth, providing continuous stability. Fixed retainers are ideal for long-term retention and are particularly effective for patients at higher risk of relapse.

Removable retainers

Clear, thin plastic trays custom-made to fit your teeth precisely. Removable retainers are typically worn at night to maintain alignment and can be taken out for eating and cleaning.

FAQs

How long do I need to wear retainers?

Retention is lifelong. Initially, removable retainers may need to be worn full-time for several months, then transitioned to night time wear. Fixed retainers can remain in place for years or indefinitely. Dr Shabri will advise on the most appropriate wear schedule for your needs.

Teeth will gradually shift back towards their original positions. This can happen surprisingly quickly — even after years of stable retention. Consistent wear is essential to protect your results.

No. They are bonded behind your teeth making them completely invisible to others.

Fixed retainers do not need to be removed, so you can eat and drink normally. Removable retainers should be taken out before eating or drinking anything other than water to prevent damage and staining.

Fixed retainers: Brush carefully around the wire using a soft toothbrush and floss daily using a floss threader or interdental brush to keep the area clean.

Removable retainers: Rinse with cool water after each use and brush gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleaner. Avoid hot water, which can distort the plastic. Store in a ventilated case when not in use.

Contact the clinic immediately. If a fixed retainer becomes loose or detached, it should be repaired promptly to prevent shifting. If a removable retainer no longer fits, it may indicate that your teeth have moved – in which case Dr Shabri will assess whether further treatment is needed.

Yes, many patients benefit from a combination. Fixed retainers provide continuous stability, while removable retainers offer additional long-term protection to keep your smile beautifully aligned. Dr Shabri will recommend the most effective retention plan for your individual needs.

Regular check-ups every 6–12 months are recommended to ensure your retainers are functioning properly and your teeth remain stable. Dr Shabri will monitor your retention and advise on any adjustments or replacements needed.
