Fixed Braces

Straightening teeth is about more than just aesthetics, it’s about achieving a healthy bite, optimal gum health, long-term stability, and a confident smile.

Fixed braces offer precise control to straighten your teeth and correct bite issues. They are ideal for more complex corrections, including crowding, spacing, and bite misalignment that cannot always be addressed with removable aligners.

Unlike removable aligners, fixed braces use brackets and archwires to gradually move the teeth into their ideal position. Dr Shabri uses CFast™ – a modern, cosmetic orthodontic system that uses clear or tooth-coloured brackets, making them far less visible than traditional metal braces whilst delivering predictable, efficient results.

Treatment Overview

Orthodontic Consultation

Your treatment begins with a comprehensive orthodontic consultation, where Dr Shabri assesses your teeth, bite, facial proportions, and gum health. Digital scans and X-rays are taken to support precise treatment planning and to create a personalised roadmap for your smile transformation.

Bracket placement

Clear or tooth-coloured brackets are bonded to your teeth, and a fine arch wire connects them to apply gentle, continuous pressure, gradually guiding your teeth into alignment.

Adjustments

Regular review appointments every 6–8 weeks allow progress checks and adjustments to keep your treatment on track.

Retention

After active treatment, retainers are provided to maintain your new alignment and prevent relapse.

FAQs

How are fixed braces different from clear aligners?

Fixed braces are bonded to your teeth and work continuously, making them ideal for complex corrections and cases where precise control is needed. Clear aligners are removable and work well for mild to moderate cases, but rely on patient compliance. Dr Shabri will recommend the most appropriate option based on your individual needs.

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your treatment, but most patients complete treatment within 6–18 months.

You may experience some pressure or mild discomfort in the first few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, as your teeth begin to move. This is normal and typically settles quickly. Modern braces are designed to be as comfortable as possible, and any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Occasionally braces can cause some discomfort on soft tissues, dental wax is advised to ease this and ensure your treatment is as comfortable as possible.

Yes. Braces are effective at any age, provided your teeth and gums are healthy.

There may be an adjustment period but most patients adapt quickly. You will need to avoid very hard, sticky or chewy foods that could damage the brackets or wires. Dr Shabri will provide full dietary guidance when your braces are fitted.

Yes. For sports, a custom gumshield is recommended to protect your teeth and braces. Playing musical instruments may require a short adjustment period, but most patients adapt quickly with practice.

Adjustment appointments are typically every 6–8 weeks to ensure your treatment is progressing as planned.

You’ll need to wear retainers to keep your teeth in their new position. Dr Shabri will provide custom retainers and advise on how long and how often they should be worn.

Complex orthodontic cases will be carefully assessed during your consultation. Dr Shabri will provide clear guidance on your treatment options and, where appropriate, may recommend referral to a specialist orthodontist to ensure you receive the best possible care and results.
